Earlier this month, Apple announced plans to lift their Digital Rights Management (DRM) from their songs starting February. This is a big win for both the direct-to-drive media industry and the customers of that industry.

FairPlay, Apple’s euphoniously titled DRM application, is to be lifted now after a great deal of controversy surrounding its implementation. With an antitrust lawsuit accusing Apple of placing restrictions on its downloadable content which would freeze out competition in the MP3 player market, customer dissatisfaction with DRM might have actually ranked relatively low in terms of the companies concerns.
