Windows 7 – A new hope for Microsoft

Windows 7 – A new hope for Microsoft

Posted on 09. Jan, 2009 by SciTech Shark in Software

After world-wide Vista fiasco, software giant – Microsoft – has found itself on the very shaky ground with unhappy customers, fans cursing the MS innovation and users looking for alternatives. No wonder, the Apple Inc. has picked up very quickly on this trend and started their selling campaign based on Vista ’s shortcomings. Putting raised Apple’s sales aside, the Vista issues  have quickly turned into Vista horror stories, relied from mouth to mouth, hence adding to the whole Microsoft’s problems.

In fact, Vista today – read Vista with service pack 1 installed – is most stable, secure and attractive OS Microsoft produced to date. No other OS comes even closer to Microsoft’s OS market penetration – no Mac OX and no Ubuntu. Now, Microsoft is trying to repaired its image with upcoming Windows release – called simply – Windows 7.

By now, you have probably heard about Redmond’s new innovation – but, is it really a “innovation”? Not really… At least, not from the revolutionary point of view. But, Windows 7 may be easly consider as new hope for Microsoft to regain its strength in OS market.

We have tested Windows 7, beta 1, and found ourselves much impressed. On the surface, it looks just like Vista but don not be fooled by looks! Windows 7 responds, runs applications quicker and smoother than Windows XP!

I have installed Win 7 on pretty slow laptop – AMD 1.9 MHz with just 512 RAM (shared between system and graphic card) – and machine became alive again! Comparing to Ubuntu install on the same laptop, Win 7 feels quicker than Unix OS, opens, closes windows with desired responsiveness. BTW, I have been running WIN7 with transparency enabled.

Aside better (much) better performance, the improved taskbar with ability to pin application and grouping related windows eliminates clutter on the desktop.

Based on my Beta experience – all I can say is “WOW”. Trust me, I was not saying “WOW” during Vista’s “WOW” campaign. Although, there as still small issues with professional applications such as Adobe CS4 not being able to install on WIN7, all other apps. such as WinAMP, Nero 9, uTorrent, Firefox 3, DivX player, MS Office – they all run without any crashes. No issues reported in regards to drivers or when connecting outside devices such as printers, scanners and digital camera.

If Microsoft continues to improve Win7 , this OS will be first on my list to purchase next year.

Win7 will run smoothly on today’s machines and on much older ones. I wonder what that will do to PC sells? Can you image upgrading Windows without worrying about old hardware? This is a great news for customers and not-so-great for PC makers who always tighten their sales with upcoming, beefed up OS from Microsoft.

As for myself, I have began believing in Microsoft again and have joined their fan base.

Several days ago I installed Windows 7 Build 7068 on my laptop (Toshiba P300-18m), just to try this upcoming OS of Microsoft. I was very positively impressed!
Now I've made a clean install and run Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit - in its latest (probably the RC) build 7077 - both on my desktop and laptop. Extremely friendly and attractive interface, combined with great functionality, flexibility and stability. I'm totally amazed. WOW!!!
I'm pretty sure that Windows 7 will manage to compete successfully with Mac or Ubuntu and eventually come first again.

Thanks for the article! Can't wait to download public beta from Microsoft's web site today. Their site seems to be overloaded because of anticipation.
